Boehner: Democrats’ Tax-and-Spend Agenda Further Threatens Job Growth, Economic Prosperity for American Families and Small Businesses
GOP Leader Echoes President’s Call to Take Tax and Wasteful Spending Hikes Off the Table

Washington, Jan 7, 2008 -

Echoing remarks made this afternoon by President Bush, House Republican Leader John Boehner (R-OH) today warned that attempts to increase pork-barrel spending through higher taxes on American families and small businesses will be met with stiff opposition from Republicans during the new session of Congress.  Boehner issued the following statement, admonishing the Majority for placing future job growth and family budgets at greater risk through an agenda built on higher taxes, more spending, and a bigger, more intrusive federal government:

“American families are rightfully feeling uneasy amid the rising costs of gasoline and energy, health care, housing, and a record tax burden they face each and every day.  And President Bush is right when he says that this economic uncertainty will only be made worse by the tax-and-spend policies embraced by this increasingly out-of-touch Democratic Congress.

“Let me be clear: congressional Republicans will stand just as strongly against irresponsible fiscal policies in 2008 as we did against the onslaught of new taxes and spending in the first year of the Democratic Majority – an onslaught that amounted to nothing less than an undeclared War on American Jobs.  Reducing the tax burden will go a long way toward easing the budget crunch felt by families and small businesses, and it’s time for the Majority to join Republicans in addressing this key economic priority on behalf of the American people.”

NOTE:  House Republicans last month released “Death by a Thousand Cuts: Democrats’ War on American Jobs,” a comprehensive report cataloging a Democratic agenda that threatens millions of U.S. jobs and family budgets at a time when many Americans are grappling with the rising cost of living and record tax burdens.  The full report is available here, while more information about the ongoing War on American Jobs can be found at http://republicanleader.house.gov/waronjobs.
