The Pelosi Premium: New Web Video Highlights the Toll Soaring Gas Prices Have Taken on Families, Small Businesses
Two Years After Speaker Pelosi Promised a "Commonsense Plan" to Bring Down Gas Prices, the Pain at the Pump Grows More Intense by the Day

Washington, Apr 18, 2008 - A new web video launched today by House Republican Conference Chairman Adam Putnam (R-FL) details the increasingly painful fallout from then-Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi’s (D-CA) broken 2006 promise to the American people that House Democrats had a “commonsense plan to help bring down skyrocketing gas prices.”  Two years after now-Speaker Pelosi made this hollow promise to the American people, gas prices are higher than ever.  In fact, according to AAA, the average price for a gallon of gasoline today is $3.44 – fully $1.11 higher than the price at the pump when Rep. Pelosi took the Speaker’s gavel on January 4, 2007.  This $1.11 Pelosi Premium is particularly painful for families and small businesses already struggling to keep up with soaring costs of living.  The video is available here and below:

The web video highlights the non-stop march upward gas prices have been making ever since the Democratic Majority took control of Congress in January 2007 – and repeats the warnings of analysts, who are now predicting that gas prices will rise to $4.00 per gallon by the time the summertime driving season begins.  This morning’s Charleston (WV) Daily Mail notes that this prediction is on-target:

“Gas prices in the Charleston area have skyrocketed yet again, inching closer and closer to the $4-a-gallon mark that experts predicted early this year."

“On Thursday afternoon, gas prices jumped 20 cents at several pumps across the state, reaching beyond the $3.60-a-gallon mark.”

West Virginians certainly aren’t alone.  The Houston Chronicle today reports that Texans are feeling the pain as well:

“There was no end in sight to the Texas retail gasoline price spike as prices at pumps statewide climbed to new record heights, according to a weekly survey.”

“Regular self-serve averaged $3.33 per gallon across the state, according to the weekly AAA Texas gasoline price survey released Friday.  That was a nickel more than last week and 55 cents per gallon higher than a year ago.”

The fact is, in every state in the union, gas prices are reaching historic highs.  And instead of working with Republicans to reduce our dependence on foreign sources of energy, lower energy prices here at home, and invest in all forms of energy to create American jobs, congressional Democrats are actually rallying behind plans – like a 55-cent per gallon increase in the federal gas tax – to make the situation even worse.  Is that the “commonsense plan” Speaker Pelosi promised to the American people?  How much longer can families and small businesses afford the Pelosi Premium?
