Boehner, House Republicans Unveil Bold Economic Plan

Washington, Jun 11, 2008 - House Republicans today unveiled their economic plan designed to help lower gasoline prices, cut wasteful Washington spending, and stop the Democrats’ largest tax hike in American history.  The agenda is the culmination of months of work by Members throughout the Republican Conference – from those who volunteered to serve on the “Reasons to Believe” working groups to Members of the Republican House Policy Committee and Republican Study Committee to GOP Ranking Members and individual Members.

House Republican Leader John Boehner (R-OH) issued the following statement on the plan:

“One of the things I have often asked our Members since Election Day, 2006 is what we would do differently if we earned back the Majority in the House of Representatives.  This agenda we’re unveiling today is a big part of the answer.  These bold reforms represent not just change for the sake of change, but change rooted in freedom.  And these reforms offer meaningful solutions to the problems faced by American families and small businesses today.

“Families and small businesses are struggling during this time of economic uncertainty, but all they’re getting from this Democratic Congress are rising gas prices, higher taxes, and a litany of broken promises.  It’s just another example of how Washington is broken.  The American people deserve better this, and House Republicans are prepared to offer bold economic reforms to lower gas prices, cut the pork from the federal budget, and stop the Democrats’ tax hike on every taxpayer.

“To protect consumers, the House GOP plan would harness new technologies and unlock America’s energy resources in the Alaskan coastal plain, deep ocean energy zones, and elsewhere to lower gas prices, create jobs, and break America’s dependence on foreign sources of energy.  To protect taxpayers from pork-barreling politicians and wasteful Washington spending, our plan would establish an immediate earmark moratorium and prohibit federal spending from growing faster than the overall economy.  And to protect American families and small businesses, the Republican blueprint would stop the Democrats’ largest tax hike in history, eliminate the Alternative Minimum Tax, and give taxpayers the option of paying a flat tax and filing their taxes on a single page.”
