Boehner, House GOP Leaders Release New Report Chronicling Democrats’ War on American Jobs

______Comprehensive Report Documents Job-Killing Tax Hikes, Spending, Litigation, and Regulations Passed by the House under the Democratic Majority

Washington, Dec 5 - House Republican Leader John Boehner (R-OH) today joined other GOP leaders in releasing “Death by a Thousand Cuts: Democrats’ War on American Jobs,” a new report cataloging a Democratic agenda that threatens millions of U.S. jobs and family budgets at a time when many Americans are grappling with the rising cost of living and record tax burdens.

The full report is available here, while more information about the ongoing War on American Jobs can be found at http://republicanleader.house.gov/waronjobs. Boehner released the following statement announcing the release of the report:

“American families are feeling the pinch of spiking gasoline prices, soaring health care costs, and other cost of living increases. But rather than working in a bipartisan way to address their concerns, the Democratic Congress seems determined to compound these problems even further.

“Congressional Democrats are waging an undeclared but aggressive policy war on American jobs and economic prosperity. They’ve passed bills raising taxes by more than $200 billion and proposed tax hikes that threaten more than 16 million jobs. They’ve asked taxpayers and small businesses to bankroll nearly $180 billion in new entitlement spending and pork-barrel projects like a hippie museum in Woodstock, New York. And they’ve opened new doors for job-killing litigation and regulation on businesses of all sizes.

“Republicans want to work in a bipartisan way to deal with the most significant problems facing American families – and we welcome like-minded Democrats to join us.”
Key findings of the report include:

  • The U.S. House of Representatives has passed bills collectively raising taxes by more than $200 billion (over 10 years) in just the first year of Democratic control of Congress (January-December 2007). These and other proposed Democratic tax increases threaten more than 16 million American jobs.

  • The revenue from these tax increases will result in bigger government and pork-barrel spending, not deficit reduction or payments on the national debt. Studies show tax hikes historically lead to spending increases, not to economic growth or deficit reduction.
  • At the same time they are advancing job-killing tax hikes to finance their expansionist agenda, Democrats have opened new doors for job-killing lawsuits and litigation, and sought to impose job-killing government mandates and regulation on American businesses of all sizes.
  • These job-killing policies have been passed as a political pay-off to special-interests such as big labor bosses and trial lawyers, whose financial support and political muscle is needed to keep Democrats in charge of Congress. If these new job-killing mandates and lawsuits are coupled with the tax increases being threatened by the Democratic Congress, millions of additional American jobs will be jeopardized.
