8-1 House Republican Uprising

Posted by Nick on August 1st, 2008

As a part of their history-making efforts to continue the fight to lower gas prices, House Republicans held a press conference just a few moments ago to demand that Speaker Pelosi allow a vote on the American Energy Act.

Images from the press conference can be seen below and on Leader Boehner’s Flickr photo stream.

You should have stood your ground longer on Friday. Why weren’t all the Republican House representatives present? Your 22 member strong, effort was great, but every Republican representative standing firm with you is what was needed. Organize, and get every Republican representative back there on Monday, and then we’ll believe you mean business. You can do more and we need action!

  2. Bob Carr Says:

My best wishes to you and your efforts.

I’m happy to see you kept your word about not leaving for break without a vote on the “All Of the Above” Energy bill. You made a good effort. I too like Shelbysbest would like to see more of this. It is abhorrent to freedom what they did. Seems like congressmen have less rights than anyone. Couple that with trying to muzzel your internet usage and we have what I as a citizen would not stand for. If you as a United States Congressman are willing to take it, I begin to worry for my rights.

Please don’t get me wrong. I have followed and blogged about the efforts you have made in picking up the ball with this and leading the charge. I truly appreciate your fighting this good fight. You have done far more than previous leaders of the House before. You have been fearless.

I believe you have more backing than you know from the people. The idea of shutting down the People’s House by pulling the plug on the free speech of Elected Congressmen is something I will not swallow. Doing that without debate or arguement is beyond the pale.

I’ll quit here before I really get upset. Keep up the good work sir. You go Sir. Hold their feet to the fire. You also might consider asking the public to join you in some sort of demonstration over this. Get Newt and the blogosphere working. I will do my part. I was making phone calls and blogging to set up a car pool to come to Washington from Mi. to support your effort. Camp out with your “sunshine” government if you will.

Our British cousins have a “Shadow Government” Let us set up one in the daylight to show the people what we can do. Show by example that we are serious. Build this with faith and they will come.

The ground work has been laid, the focus is on you and this problem. Now you need to let the people in and force the issue. You’ve thrown the tea in the harbor, but to have more than wet tea leaves you need this to be a call to arms. Ask us.

  3. Scott Says:

You should have groups meet in every state until the break is over. You can not be ignored. We must have action and it must be now. The world needs to know that the Democrats are working hard to keep the prices high and the American public is paying for it.

  4. Delsa Winslow Amundson Says:

Thank you so very much for bringing our energy situation to the for front and for showing the American people what Nancy Pelosi refuses to do.

Why is SHE NOT bringing the issue up for a vote? She is affraid the vote will pass and America will go after her own natural resources.

We need the President to call everyone back to Washington to press for ACTION,

FORCE ALL MEMBERS to VOTE UP OR DOWN!

Thank you for what You and the rest of our Republican members are attempting to do.
If there are any Democrats with you, thank them as well.

If Oil companies were greedy and they if there was oil in the places they have leases, they’d be going after it.

    Thank you

    Lets force a vote

  5. Winghunter Says:

    Shelby’s, of course, correct.

We also know someone hood-winked McCain over ANWR…the area inwhich drilling will take place is anything BUT “pristine”. And the entire country knows this now so, we better get to drilling everywhere, f-a-s-t.

The ol’ boys game is over folks, it’s time to do what’s right simply because it is.

  6. Linda D in Nevada Says:

Can you just imagine how much attention you’d get if 150 or more Republican Representatives showed up tomorrow to join the effort? This could be a defining moment for the House! We need to show Nancy Pelosi that the Republicans are there to “take care of the peoples’ business” and going on a 5-week vacation while an Energy Bill is left languishing is unacceptable. All House Members should be focused on doing the job they were sent to Congress to do. Anything less will, hopefully, be remembered by their constituents. Do whatever you can to get them back there tomorrow. We will applaud you and them — and, we will surely take note of who isn’t there. Thank you, Congressman Boehner, for doing whatever you can to demonstrate to the American people just how inept the Democratic leadership is and how important this issue is to every working family.

  7. shelbysbest Says:

The Politico is reporting that “You”, Rep. John Boehner, and Rep. Blunt are not expected to be present on the floor tomorrow, Monday, August 4, 2008 to rally with your fellow House members in continued support of asking for an up or down vote to lift the ban on offshore drilling.

Can you tell us why? Unless you have a family emergency, we expect the leadership to be present and we won’t settle for anything less. A very strong showing of House Republicans is necessary to get the results that are necessary. Stand firm together! Many of us are watching and we expect you to lead on this very important issue that will affect our energy, economny and national security for years to come.

  8. Kim Says:

I am a Democrat that supports Drill Here, Drill now. I will be voting for McCain this fall because of this issue. Please give us hope and keep pressing this issue.

  9. Diane Reynolds Says:

I am an independent who has NOT fallen for the simpleminded mantra “Drill Here, Drill Now,” because I have informed myself of this issue, and same voters of every stripe should do so as well.

This so-called “Republican Uprising” is a farce, as evidenced by the process and methods they are using, once again relying on Americans to be uninformed about how calling the Congress back into session would occur.

If they are serious about this, they will ask the President to do this, not Speaker Pelosi. This is the smoking gun that gives away their real motivation: 100% political theatre.

All of you outraged gas consumers: if you want real action, vent your outrage, faux or real, on the oil companies, their high-flying executives, and the oil production sector to begin drilling on lands they already hold.

Perhaps we should treat the oiligarchs the way we treat mining companies: once you have a lease, you have a specified amount of time in which to mine it, or it reverts. This prevents Enron-style accounting practices and attempts to corner or control the market.

    Get real!

Diane says; “if you want real action, vent your outrage, faux or real, on the oil companies, their high-flying executives, and the oil production sector to begin drilling on lands they already hold.”
Careful, Diane, that kind of talk will get you in trouble.
Ignorance is the Republic party’s most effective weapon. Pretty much all of the bad administration/legislation we have endured these past eight years has come about because the American people are ill informed and thus unable to challenge the idiocy that passes for Repuplic wisdom.
One poster cried :If Oil companies were greedy and they if there was oil in the places they have leases, they’d be going after it.
So, you assume oil companies routinely lease areas without oil because????
They are not drilling (or building refineries) because that allows for greater supply and lower prices. You honestly think the oil companies are motivated to act in ways that diminish their profits?
Drill here, and drill now, and it will be nearly a decade before any oil results…and the price of a gallon of gas will NOT BE LOWERED as a result…just check the Government’s own report on that.
If the Republicans were REALLY smart, not just Karl Rove/Rush Limbaugh smart (they sure can frame an issue; like the oil issue) they would be investing in alternative forms of energy, like electric cars and hydrogen fuel cells. Then see how much the price of oil will PLUMMET.
Now that is a scenario the Republic party and the oil companies definitely do not want to see. Now do you people get it?

  11. Ron Paul Says:

    congratulations on your pointless theater
