H.R. 6566- The American Energy Act: Text | Summary
To read an open letter from House Republicans to Speaker Pelosi please click here.
Rep. Peter Roskam (R-IL):
“You know, can you imagine my surprise getting these messages on my Blackberry while I’m sitting in my living room with my family. They say my colleagues are making a stand in the House chamber. My wife and I read them, and thought ‘I need to get there’. So we packed up the car, and drove in around 3AM. Don’t you sense something here, a tipping point? Can’t you imagine if the Speaker, the Senate Majority Leader, and the President got together and said “We are going to get this done.” Can you imagine a new era for American jobs? People can look back at today and say, ‘this is the day we got it together.’ This is the great issue of our day, and if we convince the Speaker not to run around saying ‘I’m not listening, I’m not listening!’ then we can convene a debate and make this happen!”
Rep. Jeb Hensarling (R-TX):
“Here’s a letter from the Gardner family in Texas. They can’t afford to both go on vacation and send their son to Boy Scout camp. They can’t afford it. If the Gardners can’t, then neither should Pelosi and the Congress!”
Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN):
“What did the Democrats do while the Pelosi Premium went up? They declared National Passport Month, but wouldn’t have a vote on energy. In May we voted on ‘National Train Day’ but not energy! [Holds a gas can] This is a gas can. An empty gas can, as empty as the Democratic Party’s ideas on energy, on filling this can! They don’t know how to fill it. Their only idea is $5 gas. [Holds up a new helical light bulb] The Democrat energy plan is to outlaw incandescent light bulbs, but not vote on a comprehensive energy policy!”
Tep. Tim Walberg (R-MI):
“Madame Speaker, let my people vote!”

This does not surprize me. Nancy and harry have their own personal agenda, that matches with Senator Obama’s. Obama seems to be back tracking on his energy policy and moving closer to John McCain’s. I am worried that Obama will move in and take John’s energy policy away from the GOP. Its all you guys have going right now. We need a republican in the White House.

Great job today!
America is watching.
Do you have a list of all of the Republican representatives in attendance today?
It would be nice to give them credit for their time, energy and concern.

My God! Where has Democracy gone that the Speaker of the House can hold the American publics will hostage to her own agenda? Keep up the battle, show them that teh American people can’t be ignored!

the democrats should be embarassed by this.. but I don’t think that they can be embarassed. Pilosi’s interview with stephapolis on abc was enlightening to say the least. Even stephanopolis wonders why there is no up and down vote… and in typical pilosi fashion.. it was only blame bush rhetoric.. nothing substantial.
The republicans are finally showing some backbone and doing a great job…. keep it up.
ps… great line… let my people vote… thats a great bumper sticker.

If the GOP would stay this fired up about issues that matter to the majority of Americans, we would win the White House, congress, and senate despite John McCain’s weak campaign. This level of enthusiasm from the GOP is what we want to see! It is something we can get behind. With office should come leadership…for, by and of the people. This what we need to keep our country great which I fear is slowly..or not so slowly, slipping away into socialism. Keep up the fight and make us proud. We will be with you in heart, soul, and prayer.

At one point in my life, not too long ago, I made $250,000 per year selling Real Estate. Today I make $75,000 per year and no longer in Real Estate. I have no credit card debt and I am now forced to rent. We pay below $1,000 per month for rent. We have one vehicle, my only debt, a minivan. We are a family of four and we live paycheck to paycheck. We never eat out and we can’t afford a vacation, fortunately we live in the number one vacation destination in the world, Orlando. My big splurge is to pay $37 per month so my family has unlimited access to Sea World and all the Busch Garden parks and water parks. $75,000, not too long ago, meant something and I know that my income is higher than a lot of people. I don’t know how they live. So when I hear that Pelosi actually did not allow this vote and the Dems went along with this, it makes me very angry. However when I see what my Republican leaders are doing by standing firm against this horrible self centered act by the Dems, I have to say THANK YOU AND GOD BLESS YOU!!!

Finally, the GOP is showing some life. GOOD JOB, ALL of you. This is the opportunity to start the reversal of an expected Democtratic congressional landslide.
Please keep it up - but there is a lot more to focus on. There is much more to the energy issue than just gas prices:
1) Independence from the oil sheiks, mullahs, and tyrants who hate the US.
2) Avoidance of the next Great Depression that Dems want to spur on, one caused by oil inflation.
- the price of everything that gets to stores in trucks will soar, as trucking fuel surcharges soar
- the cost of basic food items will soar, as the cost to farmers for fuel & fertilizer soars
- businesses will continue to shut down, as 900 trucking companies have
- businesses will continue to cut back, as the airlines have; as Boeing will (they have already lost 33% of previously placed airline orders)
- our auto companies will be threatened with bankruptcy and closing down (due to grossly incompetent management as well as fuel prices)
- families will not be able to afford to pay their heating oil bills this winter
- the cost of the packaging materials in much of our grocery items will soar (any plastic bottle, bag, or container is made from petroleum)
3) Global warming is a hoax. There are half a million square miles MORE of ice in the Arctic this year than last year, yet you will not hear that on the news.
- Global Warming is simply the latest socialist scheme to raise massive taxes and inflict universal poverty.
Please, GOP, attack on all fronts. A bigger Dem majority will mean leftist judges; the “Fairness Doctrine” end to free speech on the radio; and much worse.

Great job! As a police officer in East Tennessee, I am expected to do the right thing for the community that I serve. I’m glad that there are some people in Washington that are there right now trying to do the right thing. My job is not always easy and often goes unsung. Your journey may nto be an easy one, but your efforts are far from ignored. President Bush, can you not follow their lead on this and call them back for a Special Session? Or will a few Congressmen and the American people be forced to shoulder this load too?

Our natural resources are what has made this country great and is what will keep it that way. Please hold on. Bill C Woods

Yes but Obama’s policy will provide short-term relief to American families facing pain at the pump and help create five million new jobs by strategically investing $150 billion over the next ten years to catalyze private efforts to build a clean energy future.

I think you only now have to look at what Schwartzenegar is doing now, by introducing a policy for clean fuel throughout California - he wants so many hydrogen filling stations as standard by 2010.
This should be spread across the whole of the country, not just CA!
