House Republican Uprising Live Blog Day Two [4:43]

Posted by GOP Leader Press Office on August 5th, 2008

House Republicans finished speaking just a short time ago. Thanks again to everyone that has joined in the discussion via the comments, Twitter, or by calling. Let’s keep it going!

Below are quotes from some of today’s final speakers as well as video from the 2pm press conference. Tomorrow we will continue to fight on behalf of the American people to bring Congress back for a vote on the American Energy Act.

Rep. Jeb Hensarling (R-TX):

“Nancy Pelosi might think she is the most important person in the house…we know that the people are the most important…She cannot turn off the voice of the American people… who want more American energy.”

“We can’t wish it away that this is a carbon based economy… Dems try to sue it away… some say investigate… Republicans say lets try something else… that the people’s representatives be able to vote… We want an up or down vote.”

Rep. Ron Lewis (R-KY):

“The speaker flies in a 737 paid for by the people… I guess if you’re flying around in luxury you’re not too concerned about the people down below.”

“We cannot let one person say no to the American people.”

Rep. John Carter (R-TX):

“We’ve been naming post offices, bridges and suspensions… day after day voting on suspension votes… Not one vote to allow this country to become energy independent… there ought to be a vote.”

  1. Patrick Campbell, MN Says:

Now you guys are on the right track. I have turned down phone requests for money from RNC until now given the lack of leadership I sensed on the conservative side of the aisle. I am an entrepreneur with a start-up that can ill-afford to give money right now, but with this kind of principled attack on do-nothing Democrats I’m ready to do whatever I can and have already given to McCain this week. THANK YOU.

  2. Patrick Waugh Says:

Pelosi is an ENEMY of the people, and a clear and present danger to democracy!

She is the one trying to pull parlimentary tricks to stop a vote. That is dictatorship!!

  3. Elaine Lopez Says:

Keep it up, keep it going. May God bless!!!!

  4. Mark David Says:

Get some film of the Speaker on her government jet flying into SFO.

  5. Sarah Says:

This is Historic. I have one question.

Can you please make a full list of Congressman and women who support this Bill?

That would help me see if my Representative supports or if I need to make a call or two.

    Thanks.

  6. Connie Crouch Says:

I’m hooked up to oxygen in bed 24/7, so I have a helper who shops for me. This gas price thing has forced me to cut down on her shopping trips, AND to spend less money on food.

BRAVO & BRAVA for those who are staying to fight Pelosi & her ilk! God bless you & keep up the good work!

  7. LtCol Brad Shultis, USMC Says:

    …but the “Lady” ‘…has a planet to save…!’”

She, and the Democrat cowards running the Congress should be honest enough to allow an open vote on this issue, BEFORE THE ELECTIONS, so that each and every Member must run on their voting record and not hide behind the skirt of the Speaker (who, as we know, has an iron-clad re-election from her ultra-liberal voting base in San Francisco).

What is more, the President should exercise the power and authority vested in him by the Constitution and ORDER THE CONGRESS BACK IN SESSION TO DEAL WITH THIS EMERGENCY! I’m a die-hard conservative, but I cannot for the life of me understand why he refuses to take a tough stand and force HIS WILL upon the Congress, in a true demonstration of LEADERSHIP.

  8. D Alan Cassidy Says:

I just want to say thank you to all of you who are working hard for us. Thank you, keep fighting the good fight, and may God bless you all.

  9. shelbysbest Says:

Thank you so much for taking your energy proposal to the people. “We the People” need to be heard. We need a way to voice our concerns about energy costs directly to our representatives. Having townhall meetings in all the states across America will give us this opportunity. Please make these townhall meetings a priority. People are hungry to hear about new energy initatives and ideas. Also, don’t let the democrats paint this as a big oil issue, when it’s an energy independence matter. Americans need plain talk about our energy needs and straight talk. I’m hoping that all of our GOP Congressmen and women will continue to lead in this area.

  10. RJ Johnson Says:

    *applause*

    *more applause*

    *respect*

THANK YOU Republican US Representatives for DOING something about this issue!

    Keep up the excellent work…

  11. Epsie Prezioso Says:

Thanks for fighting for us out here……Texas.

  12. David Brewitz Says:

I also just want to thank you all for taking a stand. We need to explore all of our options and we cant let the left wing be so unrealistic and frankly irresponsible. We need to do everything we can to boost our economy and free ourselves of foreign energy. I truly appreciate all of your efforts and I think most Americans feel the same way about our energy issues.

  13. Danette I. Zak Says:

Thank you so much for bringing the energy “crisis” to the forefront and telling the people about all of the ways in which we can become energy independent! It is such an important issue to our survival as a nation. It’s also important that we as a people inform all of you that you work for us it’s not that we work for you! The Dems need to understand this more than anyone, I feel that the GOP is waking up and are realizing this already. Please keep up the fight and we look forward to reading your blog nightly. Thanks again!!!

  14. Terry Fiedor Says:

Look at Pelosi’s “carbon footprint!” I sure wish there were some representation from SC, but we the people are with y’all in spirit.

  15. stalban Says:

I’m telling anyone that will listen to get in the game on this one. It’s about time and finally gets people jazzed about Republicans. Keep this up and let us know what we can do to help. We’re ready!

  16. Nancy Merrill Says:

Thank you, Thank you for Finally Standing for something. I had totally given up on the Republican party, but for the first time in a ling time am proud to be not only an American, but a Republican.

Keep up the great job and Thank you.

  17. Joi Weaver Says:

Just taking a moment to say THANK YOU for taking a stand. It’s the first time that I’ve ever really cared about any issue at the House, because it’s the first time I felt like anyone there was in touch with what life for ordinary Americans. Even if the mainstream media stays away from this story, there are so many people getting the word out, and so many people who are supporting you. Keep up the good work. We’re here, and we’re listening!

  18. Loretta Balter Says:

Thank you all for standing up for the American people. It’s obvious that Pelosi is drunk with power and could care less about what’s good for America. How dare she turn off the power in the House chambers. Has she forgotten that she works for the American people? She should be looking out for our interests, not hers. She’s afraid that if this measure comes up for a vote, we will find out who’s looking out for America’s best interests and who isn’t. And that would affect the November elections. It’s sheer cowardice not to bring this up for a vote one way or the other.

  19. Jamison Kooi Says:

I am proud to see the peoples house returned to the people! Just vote Pelosi!

  20. Sarah Hirz Says:

Keep this Boston Tea Party going! God bless you guys. It’s about time someone raised a ruckus. I’m calling the White House Wednesday to ask President Bush to call a special session. Thursday I am going to Senator Hagel’s book signing (he can’t be bothered to have a town hall while “home”). I guess the retirement the American taxpayers are going to give him along with the bootprint on his behind, even coupled with his military retirement are not sufficient for Mr. I-want-to-be-President-but-nobody-likes-me Hagel. His book is more important than energy or housing. A Bronx Cheer for Chuck

  21. Julia Carter Says:

Great going folks, congressional republicans and we the people too!!! This is democracy in action. The founders would approve.

Here’s what I want to see from anyone who blames the big bad oil companies: you never drive or ride in an internal combustion vehicle, you don’t fly anywhere, you buy nothing that’s not locally produced, i.e. not delivered by truck, and nothing made of plastic (petroleum based) and no food grown with chemical fertilizers (also petroleum based.) Then you can complain about the oil companies and their record profits, etc. being to blame for this mess.

I don’t think there’s a simple or easy solution to the energy crisis, so the sooner congress gets to work debating and working out a solution, the better.

Meanwhile those of us who can are conserving. I want to find out how much oil is used to make plastic shopping bags. A lot of our oil goes to make plastics.

Let’s also remember to help each other. We can get through this, and it will make us stronger.

Keep up the good work guys, keep up the pressure. My prayers are with you and with our nation.

  22. Mike Foster Says:

where have the republicans been for years, did you finally find something you are different than the dims? Keep fighting!

  23. Dominic J. Melfi Says:

Pelosi defies description, she has a gradiose complex, dosnt she watch TV, how can she “Save the Planet” when China and Russia are large poluters? The woman is in serious need of treatment. These socialist democrats will change our country to a failed ideology of socialism. No socialist county can lead the world or maintain power over the long haul. Socialism is a disincentive that will shrink our innovation and productivity. Pelosi family is wealthy by most standards, all of these wealty politicians such as Kenedy’s et al want SOMETHING ELSE for the rest of us.

  24. Dick Zinkie - USN-Retired Says:

First off thanks for fighting the good fight!! I do have a question on how as American citizens why we can not have camerias, lights, and microphones on the floor of the House? First of all this is not the Speakers House, it is not either parties House, but it is the American People’s House. We should have the right to be able too see what is happening on the floor of our House. I spent over 20 years of my life in conflics, family seperations, to defend our freedoms here at home. Officially in session or not in session we the people should be able to see and hear our Representives on the floor fighting for our energy independance. God Bless you all.

  25. John t. Livegood Says:

If Pelosi had to buy gas and four dollars per gallon, eat like average people, make 7dollars per hour, pay for health insurance, then she would be working on the crisis instead of vacation!

  26. GT/Florida Says:

Thanks for showing the American people how a democracy is supposed to work. I’m a Democrat and I am ashamed of those gutless men and women who ran off to their “vacation” before the real work was finished. Pelosi and her pet Obama, who is now CHANGING his stance on offshore drilling, should be “run out of town on a rail.” November will be a very telling time for the Democrats!

  27. Ron Miller Says:

It is so transparent as to what Pelosi is trying to do. She does not want to debate this because of the elections. She know’s how the results of the vote will be received by the public and how that could effect the outcome of the election. She should be ashamed of herself for putting her agenda before the people. We all must rise and make our voices heard because this borders on conspiracy.

  28. norbert metz Says:

PELOSIS CARBON FOOT PRINT BELONGS ON AL GOORES REAREND

  29. MS Says:

    Patrick,

I second your comment - this principled stand has finally moved me to donate to the NRCC and the RNC. I can skip a few lunches and purchases as a result.

If this event causes a spike in the GOP campaign collections, that will be the strongest signal that our reps will get they are doing the right thing.

We do not need Unity and Hope (ie. compromise) - we need principles fights and strong actions.

  30. matt Says:

You guys are doing a great job! Thanks so much for having the courage and determination to bring an urgent issue to the forefront. Keep on fighting for the American people, we are behind you!

  31. Barbara Says:

President Bush, as Commander in Chief, can make Pelosi’s airplane go bye-bye. Let her fly commercial, another way of propping up the airline industry without debates or passing laws, etc. and the accountability of Pelosi’s traveling would be much better, especially if she is using our tax money to promote her book. Shame, shame! That would be an abuse of government property and should not enable her to put money in her pocket.

Better yet, let her drive in a Hybrid or VW and file an expense report. She might be more inclined to keep herself in DC until the work of “We the People” is done or go home and stay.

I would like to request a list as well. That will be a most helpful for the next election.

  33. Amy Says:

Maybe we should get rid of Pelosi and there ends the biggest problem we have.

  34. Vicki Says:

Yea!!! It’s about time my party started something positive. Who cares what kind of flack we get for this - go for it.

How about getting rid of the redundant and unnecessary Federal mandates? That would give ‘immediate’ relief at the pumps which the Dems say we all want so they decide to do nothing and go home on vacation. I can’t go on vacation but hey, they can.

Someone have the guts enough to slam Comrade Obama. What this country doesn’t need is for the House and Senate to gain Democratic seats. HELP!!!!!!!!!!
    Thank you,
    Vicki
    Lancaster, PA

  35. Vicki Says:

Definitely list for all to see those who care about us voters. Publish it somewhere where all can see. Please!

    Drastic times = drastic measures.

  36. Hal Perry Says:

congratulations! finally the Republicans have found something that sparks the spirit of the american people. Pelosi shot herself in the foot and is hurting the rest of her party as well. Please keep up the good fight and drive this issue to the elections. you may surprise yourselves and regain the majority! P.S. How’s the border fence coming?

  37. Lenore Sussman Says:

We need an all inclusive energy bill the Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid are out of touch.
