Marie Antoinette, the Book Tour

Posted by Nick on August 11th, 2008

From the Wall Street Journal Political Diary:

Some House Democrats are privately fuming at the pickle Speaker Nancy Pelosi put them in when she turned off the lights in the House chamber and breezed out of Washington for the summer recess without addressing voter concerns about high gas prices. By denying Republicans a chance to make floor speeches about the gas crisis on the day Congress was set to adjourn, she set off an ongoing protest on the House floor that has garnered much publicity.

The Republican floor protest was a completely spontaneous reaction against her heavy-handed tactics. Since then, many Democratic Members have been pressed by voters at town hall meetings and radio call-in shows about why they won’t allow a vote on the GOP proposal for more domestic oil production.

“It’s annoying,” one Democratic House Member admitted to me. “We don’t go back in session until September 8 and this leaves us hanging out there the whole time.”

Even more annoying to some Democrats is that Speaker Pelosi’s rush to adjourn and leave town seems to have been motivated in part by her desire to start a book tour promoting her new memoir “Know Your Power.”

Maybe drilling for oil in the gulf is just a stupid idea and won’t really solve the problem of Gas company greed and American overconsumption.

And were was John Fund, when the GOP’s Sensenbrenner did the same thing, while a committee was in session? He can’t complain about Pelosi, without looking like a hypocrite for being silent when the GOp did the same thing when they were in power.

“Completely spontaneous” - except they were doing the exact same thing when congress was in session.

  3. James Greenlee Says:

I don’t believe for one second that the Republican protest was “completely spontaneous.” It was a political stunt, with a solution that SOUNDS good, but in reality doesn’t do much. It’s the very definition of “truthiness.”

Good for Pelosi not putting up with this crap.

Republicans need to get on board with Alternative Energy, and fast. They’ve been stopping all progress in the name of protecting Big Oil.

    Bad Republicans.

    Mr. Boehner

I ask that you please take a look at diversifying the Americian energy future. To ensure that the American people can afford to use the great knowledge and inventiveness we have created it is important that there be independance from foriegn energy interests. By taking the tax breaks from oil and giving them to solar and wind energy we will be able to build those technologies in order to plan for the future. The American Oil policy has to change as well. It has to ensure we are, again, free from foriegn energy interests. The policy must restrict the amount of oil that goes into the world market. If we can get our oil need to meet or be below our oil output and have the alternitive energy cover the rest of our needs we can get back to being the strong nation we once were. Please see this as a request for cooperation in both policy making and in implimentation. We ALL need an America with energy in our future.

  6. Andrew Says:

This is rich. After months of practicing the worst and most obstinate sort of obstructionism in Congress, the Republican party suddenly decides it’s time to get things done, conveniently right before a scheduled recess, and it’s Pelosi’s fault?

If you wanted to work on energy policies, then you should have done it while Congress was in session instead of engaging in months of cheap political theater to shut Congress down during that session.

  7. Lacy Says:

I applaud Pelosi’s bravery in standing up to public pressure to drill in the U.S. I hope that more Americans can get educated on what needs to be done to address the energy crisis in not just America, but the world. Don’t let the GOP frame this debate, they will just hurt America again.

Domestic drilling is not the solution to our energy crisis- it will neither give us the resources we need for sustaining the current level of energy consumption nor is it anything like a step in the right direction concerning global warming.

I don’t believe this post at all. If you want to quote Democrats about how unhappy they are with Pelosi’s cutting off the Republican’s stupid stunt-then name names! How can I possibly believe these unarrtributed comments. Unfortunately, as we have learned over the past 7 years, Republicans lie and obstruct.

–No, it doesn’t leave you hanging, sir. You can go join them and debate, and urge Pelosi to call a vote now.

Keep up the good work, all who are showing up to try to help!

Hey where have these two been (Jamie & Andrew)? Evidently they don’t pay much attention to politics and our representatives or they would realize that you guys have been trying to get things done but Pelosi doesn’t like that. Has to be her way or no way. Well the last laugh will be on her as your actions are sure getting the publicity. Keep up the good work.

  11. Scott Salf Says:

As I remember it the Republicans in congress have been trying for months to have a debate and a vote on this situation. Pelosi has not allowed it. It is in the interest of the Democrats to keep the public needy. I now here that Pelosi has said she would be open to a vote. Now she said this from the book tour not on the floor. She also has told other Dems to support a vote if they feel it will get them re-elected. I hope the American people see through this and remember it was the Dems that have kept the price of oil artificially high just to be re-elected.

As an XDEM all I can say is keep up the fight. Some of us are coming around.

  12. XDEM Says:

It looks like the 8 people that bought Pelosi’s book have made comments here. The fact that they started blogging here shows you are getting to them. Keep up the great work. People are listening and changing.

  13. beth fletcher Says:

I have wanted to say, keep up the fight since the resess began. This is the first place I found to do this. Energy is our #1 problem currently. Drill here, drill now ! It may not be the long term answer but it’s a start. Congress needs to get out of the way and let free enterprise work.

  14. Rosalie Maimone Says:

I’m finding it hard to believe that the Congress isn’t taking note of what Russia just did to the Republic of Georgia. Don’t forget between Russia and Iran in the lower Caucasus sits a small wedge of independent soil -namely the sole of Azerbaijan and Georgia combined. Through those two countries runs the immensely important Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyahn pipeline, which deliverys precious oil circuitously from Azerbaijan to Turkey and out to the world. Georgia and Azerbaijan offer a fragile strategic conduit between the West and the “stans” of Central Asia - including Afghanistan - an area that the Soviets once controlled. There are going to be oil wars. Also Russia just recently puts it’s flag up in the Artic region as well. HELLO! Anybody up there taking note that we are looking at a potential threat to our national security?

  15. Pelosi Takes Heat from Right and Left | Christopher Howell Says:

[…] House Minority Leader John Boehner ignored the criticism of three Democratic House members and doubled down on execution rhetoric by following up his warning that the American people are going to “hang” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi for refusing to call Congress back into session to vote on whether or not more land should be opened up for oil drilling with a post on his blog by someone named Nick titled, “Marie Antoinette, the Book Tour.” […]
