DEMOCRATS’ MIDNIGHT “STIMULUS” POWER PLAY

Posted by Dave on February 11th, 2009

So this is “transparency” under the Democratic regime. . .

It appears that Speaker Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Reid’s staff met all through the night in secret with Democratic conferees’ staff to cobble together the “stimulus” conference report.  Republican conferees were frozen out.

The objective appears to be to produce a final conference report on the trillion-dollar spending bill by this afternoon so that floor action can take place in both chambers by Thursday.

They intend to ram this trillion-dollar spending bill through with as little debate and scrutiny as possible.

The House voted unanimously yesterday in support of a Republican measure stating that the American people should have 48 hours to review the bill prior to passage.  Will Democrats follow through?  Or will they do the opposite of what they voted to do yesterday?

48 hours isn’t even enough time to review it, but I suppose it is better than nothing. I suggest you get Sen. Specter and any other congressman or senator that hasn’t read it to actually read it. I am sure this shouldn’t be directed at you Rep. Boehner but I can’t believe you guys on Capitol Hill would actually vote on something you haven’t even read, and Sen. Specter admitted that he hadn’t enough time to review it, yesterday morning on national tv, and then followed with an AYE vote. We expect more from you then that.

On a more positive note, thank you and the rest of the Republicans in the House for sticking together on the NO vote, it really sent a message.

    Thank you for your consideration.

SHOCKER!!!!!!!!! Why open the lines of communication? Aren’t liberals supposed to be open-minded? Obviously Pelosi & Reid don’t know the meaning of bipartisan. The president set the juvenile tone with his sarcastic quip, “I won!” at the White House meeting/photo op to illustrate him reaching across the aisle. Perhaps they need to take a closer look within their inner circle. Then again, Reid’s spokeman is too busy playing middle school games and slamming someone in his very own party who voiced disagreement. Freedom of speech doesn’t exist in the Capitol now–how sad. Wow, the wheels of government turning has sunken to a new low with this playground criticism and clique-like behavior.

  3. Maggie Halterman Says:

I’m glad the Republicans have rediscovered the principles of fiscal conservatism. Where were they during the past few years when government spending went through the roof? There has been very little difference between the two parties until this current stimulus debate. I’m very disappointed at the number of Republicans who supported the travesty known as the TARP in September. I trust there will be no more backsliding. You might want to check out New Gingrich’s 12 step program to get us out of this mess.

  4. Phyllis Davidson Says:

Stop this nonsense - and be a patriot - Vote for the Stimulus bill so that Americans can get back to work. I will work my fingers to the bone to help get you voted out of office in 2010 if you put up these walls to our recovery!!! You, Eric Cantor and my Congressman Bill Young.

  5. GoCavs Says:

This stimulus is more about politics than people. I don’t understand how the majority can completely lock out the minority. Whats the point of elections? This stimulus is a big deal and meant to help Americans, not political parties. But 2012 is to close and I fear we will never again have a Gov’t that is for the people. This 48 hour review is yet another sham of appeasment. I doubt if the peoples view of this package will have any effect on the outcome.

  6. Thad Boynton Says:

Being a patriot would be to NOT vote for the stimulus bill without many days of review and debate. So the Republican Congress is just suppose to trust a bunch of money hungry Democrats that have dumped pork upon pork into the bill? NOT! Wasn’t it Obama himself that stated (when campaigning, of course) “I will not sign any significant legislation into law without a minimum of five days for the public to review it”? The public (and Republicans)will probably not even have a few hours to review the final draft before the Congress votes. How is that fair to anyone?

  7. Todd Welch Says:

It is a relief to see Republicans acting like Republicans. Pelosi and Reid have proven what we have been railing about for months, they will own this bill and they need to be held accountable.

  8. Lee Says:

This “stimulus bill” will not be the silver bullet that will automatically put people to work. It is a crazy overspending by the left to get the agendas that they have wanted for years through. Our child, grandchilden, and so on will be paying for this “stimulus plan” for a long time.

    Vote No!!

  9. Ian Says:

This is a total disregard for the people by Liberals and Liberal democrats. that think they know what is best for us.I hope you Republicans will regroup and do better in the next 2 years.

  10. Kringeesmom Says:

Thank you for continuing to speak out against this bill. I have been so proud of you, Mr. DeMint, Mr. McCain, Mr. Graham, Mr. Cantor, Mr. Thune and all of the others!

I’m glad that Repubs are acting like Repubs. As for Spectre, Snowe and Collins, I have chosen to spend my “tax break” on their opponents.

Please stand up and name names, special interest groups involved and campaign contributions made. It’s time for real transparancy in Washington DC and the Repubs should lead the way by shining the light into every orrifice.

  11. Marilyn Says:

I am so glad that the Republicans (and 11 Blue Dog Democrats) acted like true statesmen/women and stuck to our conservative principle. It took courage for you to stand up and take he abuse that the progressive liberals have unleashed on you. My grandchildren thank your for at least trying.

Is there any recourse the private citizens have to make Charlie Rangel answer for his tax cheating?

  12. Laurie Says:

Thank you for standing up against this alleged stimulus bill the first go-round, and getting every other Republican to do the same. You guys rock! Hope has been revived for those of us who produce and pay taxes. I pray that the Republicans will stand united in opposition to this bill the next time it comes to the floor. This bill is not a job stimulus bill and will hurt the economy. The behavior exhibited by Madam Speaker and her partisan courtesans in their midnight unilateral negotiations is shameless. It shows that the Democrats care only for their power and money rather than doing what is best for the country. Republicans are the only true patriots in this situation.

    Spendulus is actually:

Smoking Gun: Democrat Insider Says “Obama Has Secret Plan to Fund a Patronage System” The transcript: I was in a meeting after Obama got elected and I was told by the Democratic officials in that meeting that we were gonna give billions of dollars that was gonna come down the pike, our way, and what we were to with it was we were supposed to with it…

We are gonna build an army of Democratic patronage jobs…. gonna completely freeze up the Republicans forever and ever…

It’s a job-capturing system, the same one they have in Chicago… everyone’s asking ‘why isn’t that money being release until 2011 and 2012?’

Because it needs to be released at a time that’s close to the election, so that they don’t go blow the money and spend it. So they’re gonna hold some back and that’s where… the real bucks will be spend, right up close to the election.

…It’s not a stimulus package, it’s not pork! It’s a job patronage system… there’s gonna be more [people] working for the Democrats in a patronage system than the United States Army…

And the jobs are gonna be camoflaged in a million different ways, whether you’re workin’ for the city, or workin’ for the state, but when the election comes around, you’re gonna be obligated to go out and get that vote… …like ACORN, except the jobs will be larger scale. I just wanted to say that, because I was really depressed when they told me, because I really thought they’d be different. If I’ve done nothing else in my life, I’ve informed what that bill really is… it’s a job patronage system.”

  14. Georg Felis Says:

Thank you Republicans for standing up to defeat this wallowing pork monster. Keep it up!

  15. Sean Says:

We shouldn’t be surprised by Pelosi and Reid. We failed as Republicans with the past election and now we have to smell the coffee. The country has been weakened.

Teh 3 republicans need to be held accountable.

  16. Mary Stockman Says:

    Dear Rep. Boehner,

I live in PA, but just want to thank you for your leadership in opposing this spending bill…I hope all the House republicans stand on principal and vote against this bill.

I faxed, emailed and called Arlen Specter to voice my anger at his support of this bill - he does not respond and his voice mail box is full - maybe you could pass this message on to him. There will be many of us in PA actively working against his reelection bid in 2010 should he decide to run. Thanks for you time.

  17. R Harding Says:

    Rep. Boehner,

My grandmother always told me that if you don’t have something nice to say then don’t say anything at all. I am not so sure that I can follow her advise today. It would be very refreshing to see our public servants on both sides of the aisle begin to act as such. Bashing our president or whining about closed doors is not going to get our country out of crisis. I believe that you and your constituents had 8 long years to come up with good policy and here we sit. I have coworkers and friends losing their jobs and livelihood while you blog nastiness. I am under no euphoria that this stimulus plan will be the panacea, but at least President Obama is moving to do something rather than mislead himself into believing that “our economy is sound”. I find it to be rather juvenile to read all of the negative reports coming from you and some of your constituents. You are a paid elected official who is representing people from all different backgrounds and beliefs. Rather than trash the package, why not become more of a participant. It is time to reach across the aisle and act like a grown up. While you are all involved in petty squabbling, there are Americans worrying about how to feed their children or pay their medical bills. It is ridicilous to try to put yourself in a position to say “I told you so” to further your own political agenda. You can disagree without being childlike. The “Democratic Regime”? Give me a break. I am truly disgusted with the politics on both sides of the aisle. Start being part of the solution rather than the problem. Leave the trash talk to the pundits. You all need to learn the fine art of negotiating and compromise. I am so sick of hearing about the Republican and Democratic agenda. How about the American agenda?
