Dems' Resolution the "First Step," Next Step is to "Choke Off" Support For American Troops in Harm's Way
Murtha on U.S. Troops and Their Mission to Success in Iraq: "They Won't Be Able to Continue"
Washington,
Feb 15, 2007 -
This week, Democrats have come to the House floor, one after another, and referred to their non-binding resolution as a “first step” in the effort to cut off funding for American troops in harm’s way. The next step, we now know, will come in the weeks ahead as Democrats take action to deny our troops the resources needed to succeed in the Global War on Terror.
Rep. John Murtha (D-PA) unveiled today a proposal to pull the rug out from under American troops in the combat zone by cutting off their reinforcements and forcing them to face the enemy without our full support. When asked about the practical impact of his limitation plan on our military, Murtha responded flatly:
|
“They won't be able to continue. They won't be able to do the deployment. They won't have the equipment, they don't have the training and they won't be able to do the work. There's no question in my mind. We have analyzed this and we have come to the conclusion that it can't be done.” (audio) |
Murtha’s dangerous proposal would “choke off” the funding and resources our troops need to succeed in the Global War on Terror. This contradicts a claim by House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD) that, “No one in this Congress, and our troops ought to know, that no one in this Congress will not support them when they are deployed at the point of the spear.”
Last night, on Fox’s Special Report with Brit Hume, Mort Kondracke – executive editor of Roll Call – noted the gap between Democrats’ rhetoric and Democrats’ action:
|
“Now, Steny Hoyer may say that we will not defund the troops who are there, but in effect, what Murtha is going to do is deny them reinforcements which seem to me is at least as bad as denying them equipment.” |
On the same program, Mara Liasson from National Public Radio, also contradicted the claims by Democrats’ leaders:
|
“There's no doubt that there are many Democrats who would like to defund the war.” |
Kondracke later said the Murtha limitation plan is “a step toward imposing defeat” on the United States in the Global War on Terror:
|
“[I]t seems to me that is a step toward imposing a defeat. And Steny Hoyer said there's not a single member of this chamber, Republican or Democrat, who wishes us anything but success in Iraq. He should talk to the left- wingers in his own party. They have been rooting for failure from the beginning because it’s a Bush policy and they hate Bush.” |
